About me

J.M Chapman Illustrator and Propmaker photo portrait

Pronouns: She/her

Hi! My name is Jacqueline.

I am an illustrator and propmaker, working on Awabakal land in New South Wales, Australia.

My work is inspired by nature, animals with big personalities, history, mythology and fairytales. My favourite subjects are quirky characters, fantasy landscapes, and detailed sets and props that bring stories to life on page, stage or screen. I’m most excited by projects that challenge tired archetypes of race, gender, sexuality and ability to tell fresh, inclusive stories.

Since 2020 I have completed two children’s books, including four illustrations published in Hunter Writer’s Centre’s children’s Anthology, Slippery, Slimy, Feathered and Furred. I made feature props for Prospero Players 2021 production of The Crucible, and volunteered in the art department for two AFTRS capstone short films, Under the Water, and Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge (for release 2023).

  • Black and White Illustration - Adult Regent Honeyeaters singing in branches

I work in both 2d and 3d artforms, including painting, drawing, printing, sculpting, bookbinding and textiles. Nine years work with local theatre company Prospero Players has given me great experience making costumes, sets and props.

I have a BA in English and Writing from the University of Newcastle, where I dedicated my electives to also study Natural History Illustration, Animation and Theatre.

In my spare time, I enjoy bushwalking, watching movies, chocolate, Shakespeare, reading, learning languages and snuggling with my dog.

If you would like to work with me, I’d love to hear from you! Please check out my commissions page for details.
